2023–2024 School Year Updates

I hope this finds you enjoying summer break. We look forward to welcoming our treasures, families, staff, and teachers back for the 2023–2024 school year that is quickly approaching, so I want to highlight some key dates and share some important news.

If you are part of our Porfirio H. Gonzales Elementary School community, I know you are well aware of the unfortunate incident that occurred there just after the school year concluded. The cafeteria roof collapsed, and thanks to the school janitor who saw and reacted to an irregularity in the ceiling, we were able to secure the building and bring in all the proper authorities to ensure everyone’s safety. Since the collapse of the roof (just installed in 2016), a forensic investigation of the cause of the collapse and clean up has been underway. The school leadership team has a great plan in place for a seamless return to school as they will split the gymnasium for use as both a cafeteria and gymnasium until the cafeteria is fully restored. Our child nutrition team has plans in place to ensure the “same great meals - new venue.”

Here are the key dates to highlight as we approach the new school year:

  • Monday, July 31 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. all our schools (Arizona Desert, Desert Oasis, Porfirio H. Gonzales, Sheely Farms, and Tolleson Virtual Academy) will host meet the teacher night. We hope you will attend, as it is always such an exciting time for our students to meet their new teachers.
  • Wednesday, August 2 is the first day of school for our students. It is a full day of learning, and it is important for our students to unite with their classmates and kick off the year together. Please make this day a top priority, because every day of learning matters!

Please take a moment to read the complete letter from Dr. Lupita Hightower regarding the upcoming school year.
